Light Leak
-------------------------------------------------------

Time loop, a beginning
The machinery
A jump between the parallels.
The nocturnal nudge of the shiny splinter in time that came off as a dream broke out somewhere.
All that was ‘conscious’ has crawled into the creases of the sheets and slipped off the tactile ‘here and now’
The space between the surreal and the sleepy.
Holding on to the umbilical cord of known time.
Response to sound
Oscillation of eyes in a sudden frenzy
Fear of shadows
Echo.

In September 2022, I was one of the two people in India selected to do the month-long Celluloid Kaarigar Residency at Harkat Studios in Mumbai. During my time there I had to make a short film, learning and practising the craft of shooting and editing manually on 16mm film. In what felt like a beautiful month-long rainy afternoon, I created my film ‘Light Leak’. I was drawn to the medium because of its tactility, because on 16mm film, deliberation and presentation become a delicate interplay.

The mediums included everything from filming with a Bolex to collages of film on film and painting with bleach and glass paint and markers and everything in between. After manual editing with a splicer for days on end, the film was sent for a scan and later editing was continued digitally.
