Across Dualities
----------------------------

The introduction of surreality, when done in a cinematic experience that is meant to settle in the real world first and then open a crack - a tiny crevice into the weird and uncanny, does not usually find a good diving board. When presented adjacent to normalcy it becomes more like a layer than an enveloping experience. And in some cases there isn’t even a crevice but only the hint of something existing on the other side of the proverbial ‘wall’. This thought began with a ray of conclusion in sight but has somehow lost it so it’s better to let it sit and simmer here.

The concept of creation in survival mode. It is true that the ones who want to do it will do it either way, but sometimes just wanting does not feel enough. The spreadsheets, following brand guidelines, maintaining invisibility as a designer (oh this is a big one i’ll come back to it)- they all feel like water that is reaching up to the ears.

The invisibility of the designer is another thing that sits heavy on the everyday thought trajectory and makes the wheels a little bit harder to churn. Purpose driven design is a sub-section of creative expression that finds itself surrounded by enormous boundaries. To the scattered (although not disorganised) fragmented and overloaded, and ever-unsettled maker’s mind this might seem like a cage at times. Letting go of identity as a part of the professional practice is an interesting way to keep the iconography of a certain design language going but the existentialist the inevitably makes home in the mind of an instinctive maker just wants to see the weird and the thought-inducing core of thought in full display, and although overwhelming it is never not amusing. This is not without the awareness that these are very different two things being talked about and reality requires duality of existence at a lot of instances, but on some days an overlap seems just the right thing to do, even if it may not lead to a coherent place in dialogue.
